written and recorded by Joni Mitchell

Occasionally a folk song finds its way into my repertoire. As I am not much for folk music, in general, such songs have to be better than average to entice me to learn them.

‘Both Sides Now’, written and recorded by Joni Mitchell, is one...

One Tin Soldier

written by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter
recorded by The Original Caste

I don't usually go for folk music but this one has a particularly good story and lesson in it. 'One Tin Soldier', written by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter, is not only well written but has great music. It was recorded, originally by a band called "The Original Caste" but I have no idea who the artist I heard sing it was. Who ever he or she...

written and recorded by David Francey.

Sometimes it is very hard to classify a song into a given category. Country? Folk? Traditional? All you know for certain is that there is something about the tune that appeals to you. Such was the case for me and a song, by David Francey, called 'Torn Screen Door'. I guess what caught my ears at first was the mention of a fusty Massey Harris. My father had a rusty Massey Harris 44D. Guess it touched...

Shenandoah: Author unknown.

One of the most beautiful instrumental pieces I have ever heard has to be Shenandoah. A classic American Folk song, it is slow intricate and moving. I have tried to learn a version of this tune ever since I started learning to pick and I must admit I have yet to master it by a long shot. Still I thought it would be nice to record my efforts so far and see how it came out. Anyway here it is. I hope you will like it.

SIXTEEN TONS written by Merle Travis and recorded by Tennessee Ernie Ford.

Although, perhaps not favored by the general public because it is a sort of protest song, Tennessee Ernie Ford's 'Sixteen Tons' is just my kind of story. It tells of the hard people and life of that was mining in the early years of the American Industrial Age. Besides having great lyrics and music it's story carries a strong lesson about the harshness that is the life of mining.
A fellow jammer, I met a while back, Gerrie Lunde from North...
