Give My Love to ROSE

Posted 09-15-2013 at 03:31 AM by Bishop (Elger's Recording Studio)

written and recorded by Johnny Cash.

Almost without exception, nearly everywhere I have ever played, somebody has asked me to do a Johnny Cash number. Truth be told, I really never liked Johnny Cash as a singer. He has a voice like a sack full of gravel and a tendency to sing mostly about prisons and convicts as if glorifying that life style. That's my personal opinion. I know he was a great artist and all but he almost never fit my...

Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms

Posted 09-10-2013 at 02:26 AM by Bishop (Elger's Recording Studio)

written by Thomas Mooren 1908
cover by Elger Heath
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdLBhQviap8

Some years ago I had the pleasure of sitting down with an old fiddle player I knew and I picked out a fiddle tune that had been running through my brain for as long as I could remember. When I finished he said that it was likely one of two possible tunes. Either it was 'Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms' or another tune he named, the title of which I can no longer...

Who Will Sing For Me

Posted 09-10-2013 at 02:19 AM by Bishop (Elger's Recording Studio)

written by John Thomas Ely and recorded by Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJTsHAYLudo

As a singer, from a long line of family singers, I often feel strongly that a friend ought to sing at the funeral of any musician or singer who has passed away. I'm also a big fan of the concept of the Irish Wake, which is a musical party held after a funeral to celebrate the life of the person who passed away. This seems to me to be a far better way to remember...

(Who Says) You Can't Have It All

Posted 09-03-2013 at 02:20 AM by Bishop (Elger's Recording Studio)

written by Alan Jackson and Jim McBride and recorded by Alan Jackson.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfKsJXZK9ZA

When I was young and just learning to sing my uncle Nick, then my idle and a great singer in his own right, taught me that you had to know when to emphasize emotion and then pull out all the stops. He often used old Hank Williams tear jerkers to demonstrate this, When I heard Alan Jackson's '(Who Says) You Can't Have It All' I fell in love with this tune, especially...

and recorded by Linda Ronstadt.

Some folks are a little shyer than me and they rarely admit that they can sing but from time to time they get caught on a microphone and whala. What do you know? They can sing. Here is a cover of 'Life Is Like A Mountain Railroad' Performed by a good friend of mine, Brenda Hubbard. Give her a little backup band and I think she did fairly well. One of these days some one will ask me if I have any recordings...
