A Picture from Life's Other Side

Posted 10-15-2014 at 09:07 PM by Bishop

written and recorded by Hank William Sr.

My guitar and I have been together for what seem to have been most of my life. Sometimes, when I pick up my instrument, memories come flooding back of folks and times long since past. I donít know about the folks from this generation, but when I was young I was always a sucker for a good story that was well told. I can remember my Uncle Nick coming over to our place for one of his all too few visits and sitting on the floor in the living room as he sat on the couch and sang old Hank Williams tunes.

My favorites were the talking songs that told of the sad and hard realities of life. If my uncle and Hank shared one thing in common it was that they were both great story tellers. I recall being entranced as Nick would sing Hank Williamís ďA Picture from Lifeís Other Side.Ē I am sure that I have said it before but it bears restating; if you know someone that can sing these kind of songs take the time to really appreciate what they are doing and saying. This is about the hardest kind of music to do well. It took me years to figure out how to do it well and the secret isn't in the singing but rather in being able to really tell a story well.

Written by Hank Williams Sr., ďA Picture from Lifeís Other SideĒ is one more wonderful example of this style of Country music. Hank, as usual, did an excellent job recording this gem. Now letís see if I can do it justice. Here is my cover of ĎA Picture from Lifeís Other Side.í

Once again here is a prime example of the lesson Ďnever believe everything that you Google. When I did the research on this song I Googled the lyricists and I came up with results that indicated that Hank Williams had co-written this song with Johnny Dowdy. As a result I credited the song lyrics to Johnny Dowdy and Hank Williams. Low and behold Johnny Dowdy, himself, commented on my video telling me that he didn't have anything to do with writing this song. Wow! Johnny Dowdy himself. Oops! Sorry Johnny this was my mistake for not being careful enough in my research. I do apologize. I have since deleted the old posts and remixed the video with the corrected credits, (no big deal) and re-uploaded the video.

I would like to thank Johnny Dowdy for his comment and for correcting me so I could make this right. You were very nice about this mistake. I appreciate that a lot!
