"Who do you say I am?"

Posted 06-16-2016 at 07:34 PM by Epiphany

These are the words of scripture found in Luke’s gospel chapter 9 where it is written “One day, as Jesus was alone praying, he came over to his disciples and asked them, “Who do people say I am?” This presents two very important leadership practices. First the idea of “being alone”, finding, or rather making time to reflect and consider broader issues and ideas. We push ourselves to meet the demands of our business, family and community responsibilities with little to no time for self reflection and creativity. Studies indicate the result of “busy” is often poor prioritization, losing site of the big picture and creativity impairment. So lesson one:

Make time and space to be quiet and reflect, tapping into your natural creativity

The second lesson to be drawn is the question asked “Who do people say I am?” Who do people say you are? Have you asked? Does it align with what you believe they will say or what you hope they will say? This is a worthy exercise. If they don’t say what you believed they would, you may need to adjust your behaviors to better align with the leader you envision. This alignment increases engagement, followership and bottom line results. So ask the question:

Who do people say I am?
