Chapter 15 part 3

Posted 12-20-2010 at 03:34 AM by rek57@hotmail.com

(I know it is a custom to give gifts.)
(I haven't much to give)

"Oh. Don't worry about that." Julie said, laying her hand on Kigh-KEE's arm. "We haven't got any gifts either."

(But you gave me so much all ready)
(Hope and friendship)

"And you have been a dear friend to us too." Kate said.
Kigh-KEE scanned the faces of her human friends with a smile on her lips. Her gaze stopped on Kate. Then she tilted her head.

(I would like to give something to you)

She reached up and removed the band from her arm, and lay it on the table.

(Each person in the palace must wear one of these)
(It allows them to move freely in the royal walls)
(Any one caught in the palace without it would be executed)
(I have no further use for it now)
(Please take it)
(My good friend)

Kate picked up the band with watery eyes. Kigh-KEEs arms were much smaller than Kates, but it fit around her wrist just right. "Thank you." Then she gave Kigh-KEE a loving hug.
Cal entered the room carrying a tray of steaming glasses.

(I TOO HAVE A GIFT)

The aroma quickly filled the room.
"Is that coffee I smell?" Sam asked, sticking his nose in the air, as if he could sniff up every molecule himself.
Cal set the tray down on the table, and tilted his head to look at Sam.

(IT IS AS CLOSE AS I COULD GET)

A smaller container had a milky white liquid in it. Cal took the small glass off the tray and placed it on the table.

(THIS IS A SWEET EXTRACT)

All but Sam pored a little in their coffee. Rick handed it out to Sam. Sam picked up his glass. "No thanks. I prefer mine ..."
He paused to look at the color of the Martian coffee. "Amber."
They all sipped their coffee. Even Cal and Kigh-KEE tried the strange human liquid. Kigh-KEE drank hers with very little sweetener. Cal, on the other hand, used about half the sweetener in his, to cover up the strange bitter taste.
A slow rhythmic beat could be heard echoing through the room.
"What's that sound?" Rick asked, setting his glass on the table.

(IT IS THE VRILLIANS)
(THEY ASKED TO BE PART OF YOUR CELEBRATION)
(I HOPE YOU DO NOT MIND)

"Of course not." Kate spoke up. I was feeling kind of guilty because they couldn't."

(IT IS THEIR TRADITION TO GIVE THANKS WITH A SLOW BEATING DRUM)
(I HAD IT TRANSMITED IN HERE)
(AND YOUR CELEBRATION IS BEING TRANSMITED THERE)

"Can they understand us?" Julie asked.

(A TRANSLATION HAS NOT BEEN ESTABLISHED)
(BUT THEY CAN TELL A LOT BY THE TONE OF YOUR VOICE)
(JOY, HAPPINESS, OR ANGER)

They all sat in silence for a moment, listening to the slow rhythmic beat. Julie finally broke the silence with her voice, that sounded like heaven itself, as she began to sing. "Si...lent night...ho...ly night..." Soon Kate joined in, and then Sam. Even Rick started to sing, although slightly off key. Kigh-KEE didn't understand the words, but liked the sonld, as she slipped her arm around Kate, with a happy face. Cal stood quietly lisrening, as Julie reached over to give his hand a gentle squeeze. Cals exspretion hardly ever changed, but his large eyes would blink slowly when ever he understood, as they did now.
