Here are the directions in her words with a few minor changes for practicality reasons.

Cook time: 45 min however “the longer it simmers the better.”

Ingredients needed:
• 1 yellow onion, diced.
• Garlic salt
• Italian seasoning
• *Sweet basil
• 1 Bay leaf
• Sugar
• 1/3 ground round
• 1 large 16 oz. can of tomato paste (save can)
• 1 small 8 oz. can of tomato sauce (save can)
• Olive oil

First, coat a large shallow saucepan with olive oil and brown meat and onion. “The onion is what gives it flavor.” Then season with garlic salt (about 10 shakes of the seasoning should do, lol). Add Italian seasoning about 1 T “but be sure not to use too much because it will become bitter” and about 1 T of sweet basil, "this is the key ingredient." Finally add sugar. Start with about 1 heaping T and add to taste (I’ve seen her use much more than 1 T by the way.)

Next add and brown/ simmer tomato paste “stir it until it gets dark looking” and then add the tomato sauce.

Lastly, add hot water while stirring. Use the saved cans and add 1 can of hot water each, using the saved paste and sauce cans. *Remember not to throw them out or you’ll be fishing through the garbage can like me. I guess you could use another form of measuring device ha ha.

Throw in the bay leaf and cover.

Simmer while stirring occasionally for at least 45 min or so.

*Remember there are no exact measurements and everything is “season to taste.”

Warning: Don’t do what I did and mix up the paste/ sauce. I did the opposite and used a large can of sauce and small can of paste. Wow, what a difference, lol. Mom saved the day but had to add what seemed like 10 lbs. of sugar.
